WHO IS SOULJA BOY?
Soulja Boy, born DeAndre Way in Chicago, moved to Atlanta at age 6. A-town started the boiling cauldron of musical creativity that had begun to seriously bubble by the mid-90s. From the internet he began to get good responses, so I set up my website, www.souljaboytellem.com as it helped him push his name. With nearly 10 million people having visited Soulja Boy’s MySpace page since its inception and his legion of fans uploads YouTube clips daily, emulating his epidemic self-titled dance routines. His “Crank Dat Soulja Boy” anthem is scalding radio. He released his debut album on Interscope Records, aptly called SouljaBoytellem.com and next album on deck is titled, I Soulja Boy.
We got deeper into conversation with Soulja talking about his Multi-Year Deal with Yums Shoes and Apparel, music, and some stupid sneaker talk.
TELL US ABOUT THE NEW ALBUM?
Soulja Boy: It was titled Back 2 School but we recently changed the name to I, Soulja Boy. The new single that is floodin’ the radios and on MTV right now is Donk, which is crazy… we real excited ‘bout this one. Last album I produced pretty much everything but this album I reached out to a couple of producers… Polow Da Don made some crazy stuff happen. I got some secrets I aint gon let out yet. But more of the songs that’s out with Gucci Mane, Yo Gotti, and also appearances by Shawty Lo & Bow Wow.

But it’s the evolution of Soulja Boy, more writing and lyrical … the new Soulja Boy
SO I HEARD YOU GOT A CARTOON ABOUT TO PREMIERE?
Soulja Boy: Yaaa man its going to drop this fall on Cartoon Network and its basically cartoons entering the real world… real life funny situations. Look out for it. There is a clip of me and Lebron James on Youtube that shows how the cartoon is gonna be set up.
Sneek Peak… Soulja Boy & Lebron
HOW DID THE DEAL COME ABOUT WITH YUMS?
Soulja Boy: Ha… the deal came about after I saw them. I was on tour with Bow Wow and Chris Brown. We were overseas and I was actually doing the video to My Dougie with Lil Will and he had em on. I liked em… they fit my colorful style. So I had Lil Will put me in touch with Yums and we started talking about a deal and it was done deal after that.
WHY ARE SOULJA BOY AND YUMS A MATCH?
Soulja Boy: Swaggin and dressin is wasup. Its me, they usually go wit what I wear. And its coo because I got to help design the sneaker and pick out what I like. I did a Soulja Boy sneaker and then a SODMG (Stacks On Deck) sneaker. And its workin out a lotta stores like Footlocker are put in crazy orders… so we excited.
WAS THE INFLUENCE OF CREATING THE SNEAKER SIMILAR TO THAT OF CREATING MUSIC?
Soulja Boy: Ok ummm… When I make a song I of course start with the beat but I figure who Im bout to make this song for. The club or whatever and I think about who gon play it. So with the Yums sneakers I more thought about who gon wear it. The people who I want to get to wear it don’t have to be a fan of Soulja Boy, they don’t even need to know who I am… because the sneaker is clean. But I was make music for myself and people like myself so I used that concept when thinking bout the sneakers. Fashion and music can be separate so I look at it as a different business.
THINKING BACK TO ELEMENTARY WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST PAIR OF SNEAKERS?
Soulja Boy: Haha elementary… I can’t really remember my first pair but I used to buy a lot of Ones( Air Force Ones), the lows and the hi’s. When the music thing started to really pop- off I started to get into the Bathing Apes.
SINCE YOU’VE STARTED TO TRAVEL WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN WHERE THE SNEAKERS WERE JUST STUPID?
Soulja Boy: It was either Paris or Tokyo… Ya it was Tokyo, they had like a Nike Factory and they had everything from the hottest sneakers and bookbags. It was crazy so I’d say Tokyo.
WHEN DID YOU REALLY GET INTO SNEAKERS AND THE FASHIONABLE SWAG?
Soulja Boy: Oh I love to swag… The loud colors, the light greens, and the yellows. So color has always been in my swag but now that we got money we can really swag it out with the Gucci… its swag season, look out for the song Gucci Bandana featuring Shawty LO off the new album. So I usually start with the color of my shirt, then I go to the pants… maybe some all white dickie shorts, and then I grab a pair of Yums because they are usually a solid color.
THE FIRST LADY OF S.M.S WANTS TO KNOW WHAT IS SOULJA BOY’S FAVORITE JORDAN/SNEAKER OF ALL – TIME?
Soulja Boy: My favorite sneaker of all-time are of course a Jordan. And I’d say my favorite J’s are the Air Jordan 4s. Yea I love the Jordan 4s…
